Autumn, winter, summer or spring, in Nothern Europe, you can expect getting wet in every season. A waterproof jacket will keep you dry and warm on those wet days. The water repellent layer prevents water from penetrating the fabric keeping your jacket light and breathable. However, this layer can wear off after a while. Fortunately, you can repair this layer yourself, and we’ll give you the perfect tips!
Washing a waterproof jacket
In order to keep your waterproof jacket at its best, it is important to maintain it regularly. You can do this, first of all, by washing your jacket the right way. This ensures that the pores in the fabric stay clean and the jacket retains its breathability.
1. Before washing, close all zippers and turn the jacket inside out.
2. Always check the washing instructions for the jacket in question. The coating of these coats are fragile and can be damaged by washing if you do not wash them at the right temperature.
3. Use special detergents like the Tenson MPC Wash. This will make your clothes water- and dirt-resistant again.
4. In addition, it is important not to use fabric softener so that the original properties of the jacket are not affected.
5. Finally, it is important to let the jacket dry properly. The best way to do this is to use a drying rack or hanger and let it air dry. Never let the coat dry on a radiator!
Re-impregnating a coat
Do you notice after a while that washing alone is no longer sufficient? Then you can treat the jacket with an impregnation agent. This is often found in the form of a transparent spray. This also ensures that the breathability of your jacket remains intact.
Are the water droplets no longer running off your jacket, but are being absorbed by the fabric? Then it’s time to impregnate your jacket. The easiest way is to hang the jacket so that it is completely straight. Now you can apply an even layer of the impregnation agent. Then let the coat dry thoroughly for a few hours.
You will notice that some places in the jacket wear out faster than others. Think of the elbows, shoulders or inside of the sleeves. Therefore, it is wise to keep a close eye on these parts and even treat them two or three times with the spray.
